What Car? Q&A - Which cars will fit in my garage?

21 December 2007
Q: Is there a car shorter than 100 inches in length? I have a wheelchair lift in my garage, which limits how much room I have to park.
Debbie Deberry

A: 100 inches is 254cm today's money. Unfortunately, there aren't any new cars that will fit into such a small gap. The new Smart Fortwo comes closest at 270cm (106 inches).

Don't despair, though - earlier Fortwos (pre-2007) were slightly shorter and measured just 250cm (98.4 inches), so these would just about squeeze into your garage.

There's not much in the way of boot space or luxury, but the Smart is fun to drive, cheap to run and handy for parking in those tight spaces around town.

Prices start at around £2000 for early cars, but we'd advise spending around £4000 on a low-mileage '04 car.
