What Car? Q&A - Which used cars are in tax band B?

28 September 2007
Q: I would like to change my vehicle for one that falls into the lower £35 a year tax band. Which used cars fall into this band?
Peter Evans, via e-mail

A: The list of all new cars that fall into the £35 band (band B) for car tax can be found here on whatcar.com - just see our Green Car Buyer's Guide by clicking here.

There, you can search for a car by tax band and by type of car - so if you want a supermini, you can specify that.

You can also find information on cars in tax bands on the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) website, www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk.

Cars in this band must have been registered after February 31 2001 and emit between 101 and 120 grams of carbon dioxide for every kilometre travelled.

Some of the cars have only just come onto the new car market (such as the Mini Cooper Diesel), so used versions might be hard to find.

However, others have been around a while, making them good used choices.

Used cars worth considering include the Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTi 75 (119g/km) or the 1.5 dCi version of both Renault's Clio and Megane (117g/km and 120g/km respectively).

There are petrol cars that fall in band B, too. The Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i, Citroen C1 1.0i and Peugeot 107 1.0 all emit just 109g/km.

Check if these (or any of the other cars in the list) fall into your budget by visiting the valuations section of our website.
