What Car? Q&A - Which vehicles can seat eight people?

22 June 2006
Q: Can you advise which MPVs or 4x4s have eight seats?
Steve P

A: If you need to get eight people in one car, your options are fairly limited.

On the MPV front, you can go for the Citroen C8, which, including the no-cost option of a three-seater bench in the third row instead of a pair of seats, starts at £19,320. Our Target Price mystery shoppers show you can easily get the Citroen from just over £16,000.

Fancy a 4x4 instead? Then you're looking at a Toyota Land Cruiser, which has a list price starting at £28,915. Factor in an achievable Target Price discount of around 7% and you'll pay just under £27,000.

Land Rover's 110 Defender Station Wagon can also accommodate up to nine people, but four of them sit sideways on benches in the rear, which might not be suitable for your needs. Pay from around £21,000.

If you buy used, you can broaden your options a little, with cars such as the Toyota Previa, but many of these will use lap belts for at least one passenger instead of a three-point belt.

It's still legal to use a lap belt fitted in an older car, but manufacturers aren't allowed to fit them to new models any longer, because they're not as safe as a three-point design.

Bear this safety compromise in mind if you do go down the second-hand route.
