What Car? Q&A - Why do my brakes keep warping?

17 November 2005
Q: I have an ongoing problem with the brake discs warping on my 1998 Jaguar XJ8. I’ve already replaced the front disks twice, and they will need a third set shortly. I don’t do many miles a year, but my dealer is unable to tell me what’s causing the problem. Can you help?

A: A recurring problem of warped brake discs could be due to your driving style, rather than mechanical fault or poor-quality parts. Braking late for junctions and roundabouts can quickly build up heat in the brake discs and pads. The heavier the car, the greater the amount of heat build-up.

What’s more, keeping your foot on the brake pedal while stationary at traffic lights lets the heat from the brake pads be absorbed into the disc, rather that dissipating normally. This eventually will cause the discs to warp.

Try braking earlier when approaching junctions, and avoid holding the car on the brakes when stationary for longer than 10 seconds.
