What Car? Q&A - Will my car fit my garage?

17 July 2008
Q: I'd like to buy a new compact executive car, but my garage is rather small, so it can be no wider than 1750mm (excluding wing mirrors) and no longer than 4505mm long. Does such a car exist?
Mike Haszko

A: Unfortunately, none of the current compact executives will squeeze into your garage. The BMW 3 Series comes closest, but is still 67mm too big round the middle.

We'd suggest looking at other types of car, which are just as classy but a bit more compact.

If rear legroom isn't too important, the BMW 1 Series Coupe and new Mercedes CLC would fit. The Mercedes is more spacious, but the BMW is a better car in almost every other area.

If you need something more practical, the BMW 1 Series hatchback is also small enough for your garage - and you have the option of five doors.

It's a lot cheaper than most compact executives, too, so you could either go for a top-trim model or save yourself lots of cash and get a more modest trim.
