22 July 2009
Cheap run around
Name: Jean Forbes
Age: 71
Drives: Fiat Punto
Budget: £5k (plus £2k scrappage)
Wants: 'Something to replace my ancient Fiat Punto.

I don't do many miles, so I just want a small runaround that's cheap to buy, insure and tax.'

Fiat Panda 1.1 Active ECO
Price: £7095 (£5095 scrap)
Target Price: £5987

Jean's Punto is more than 20 years old, so this new model will probably feel like a luxury limo.

It's a great scrappage buy and is in the lowest group for insurance. A tax disc costs just £35 a year, too.

KIA Picanto 1.0, '09/09
Price: £4900

Jean could buy a nearly new Picanto, then sell her old Panda on eBay and make a few quid back.

However, the Fiat is a better car, so we'd take advantage of the scrappage scheme and buy new.

TOYOTA Aygo 1.0 VVT-i + 3dr, '06/56
Price: £4950

Used Aygo values are still high, but the baby Toyota is dirt cheap to run.

Worth a look, but since Jean's old car qualifies for the government's scrappage allowance, we'd recommend using the scheme.
