Volvo XC60 2.4D DRIVe SE
Price £26,745
Target Price £24,884

One of the finest SUVs around, and this new two-wheel-drive version should manage 47mpg. There's a decent amount of rear head- and legroom, and the Volvo is hugely comfortable inside.

Land Rover Discovery 2.7 TDV6 XS, '08/58
Price £27,480

The new Discovery 4 is simply brilliant, but it's a bit too pricey for Suzanne. However, she could afford a nearly new Discovery 3. It's still a cracking SUV and there's loads of space in the back for her kids.

Mercedes-Benz S320L CDI, '06/55
Price £28,490

Merc's limo is still the best luxury car money can buy. We've picked the long-wheelbase version – there's acres of room in the back. It's not exactly frugal, but 36mpg isn't half bad for a car this big.
