HYUNDAI i10 1.2 Classic
Price: £7095
Target Price: £6780

Cheap as chips and, unlike most budget cars, this one has air-con as standard. It's no road rocket, but the 1.2 petrol engine should manage 56mpg.

Rear passengers won't fancy long journeys, though.

FIAT Grande Punto 1.4 Dynamic 5dr, '08/08
Price: £7000

Great to look at and good enough to drive, the Punto is seriously good value, and Dynamic trim comes with air-con as standard.

This 1.4 petrol version should manage nearly 50mpg.

VAUXHALL Corsa 1.4i 16v Club (AC) 5dr, '07/56
Price: £6900

This supermini a former What Car? Car of the Year.

The Vauxhall Corsa won't be quite as cheap to run as the Hyundai, but it's a much bigger and better car. It should do over 48mpg.
