What Car? Used Car of the Year 2006 - Best Executive Car 2006

BMW 5 Series
Model: 530d SE auto 4dr
Year: '01/51
Cost £11,500

Is there a slicker car for £12,000? We don't think so. For the same price as a new small family hatchback, you could gain entry to the executive car club in the shape of a five-year-old BMW 5 Series.

Granted, it's the prevous-shape model, but many motorists prefer the smoother, more rounded shape of this Five to today's more controversial, sharp-edged design.

One judge called this the best diesel car on sale in recent years, and we'd be inclined to agree. The 530d auto can do it all: waft along in imperious calm on long motorway hauls; transport the family and their luggage in comfort; and even raise a smile on your favourite back-road.

It's economical as well as punchy, and there are few reliability gremlins to watch out for. This car lives up to the German reputation for quality.

Still not convinced? The last BMW 5 Series won seven consecutive What Car? awards as the Best Executive Car - an achievement which remains unmatched by any rival.
