Ford FocusModel: 1.6 Zetec 5dr
Year: '03/03
Cost: £5750
Not for nothing is the Ford Focus Britain's best-selling car. Here is a model that kicked the rule book into touch when it replaced the unloved Escort in 1998.
For a start, it looked cool, with a wedgy, sci-fi appearance. Time has mellowed the design, but the previous-generation Focus remains a slick-looking car.
Best of all, though, is the way it drives. Many argue that the old model is actually a sharper-handling car than today's more mature car. It's certainly a sporty steer, with a delicious balance between absorbent ride and enjoyable handling.
Our chosen 1.6 Zetec five-door model comes with alloy wheels and air-conditioning, and used-car forecourts are flush with plenty to choose from.
The good news continues when it comes to reliability. There's nothing in particular to watch out for and our experts praised the Focus for its durability. A quick word of warning, though: many have been used as company cars, so make sure you get one that has been cared for.
