Volkswagen Golf GTI
Price from £15,000 Year '05/05In 1976, VW invented the Golf GTI, the first hot hatch, and a car that combined performance and practicality.
Over the years, there have been several imitators, but none have come close to matching the Golf GTI's image.
More than 30 years on, the latest version continues the tradition; and, for £15,000, you can now own one of the best fast hatchbacks ever made.
Its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine is smooth and easy to use in town, and with 197bhp it also endows the car with blistering pace.
The Golf has massive grip and traction through corners, while the firm suspension gives you
superb handling, but not at the expense of a harsh ride.
The Golf's trump card is space. Not only does it drive superbly, it will also seat five people and carry their luggage, giving you the best of both worlds.
DesirabilityIn assessing this class, our judges felt that the Golf GTI was so good as a fast yet practical car that it beat more obvious pure sports cars such as the
Mazda MX-5 and
Porsche Boxster.
At the same time, it also had the image to score over popular cars like the Mini.
All that means the GTI is a desirable car, and you'll need to search to find the best examples. Main dealers are a good bet, but don't rule out supermarkets.
Remember, the GTI is one of the few cars where you won't pay a premium for a five-door model. Many buyers prefer the sportier styling of the three-door, keeping its prices relatively high.
In fact, prices for all used Golf GTIs are a little high, but their values fall slowly, minimising the amount you'll lose through depreciation.
