Kia’s all-new supermini; a rival for the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo.
The new car is based on the same underpinnings as the Hyundai i20 supermini, but Kia has taken the development several leagues further. Plenty of work has gone into keeping weight down, to the extent that the Rio weighs no more than the outgoing model, yet is longer and wider, more spacious and considerably better equipped. It will also be available in two bodystyles for the first time, with the five-door arriving in several weeks and the three door due in early 2012.
There will be four engine choices on offer, two petrol and a brace of diesels. A 1.2-litre petrol is new but the most radical of these is a new three-cylinder 1.1-litre diesel that, with stop-start and Kia’s Eco Dynamics tech, is capable of 88mpg and a hybrid-embarrassing 85g/km CO2 emissions.
We’re also told that the company’s chassis engineers have been doing development work in the UK, ensuring that it rides and handles properly on narrow, bumpy British roads.
