Q: The Government says it does not want us to use our cars, but surely it needs the UK motor industry and all the taxes from car purchase, road fund licence and fuel duty? Its revenues would be shattered if everyone stopped driving.
Brian Hauxwell, Croydon
SL: The Government does not want to stop people using their cars. Of course we do want to offer people real alternatives and encourage more environmentally friendly behaviour wherever that is possible.
There are tax incentives for more environmentally friendly choices. Levels of Vehicle Excise Duty and company car tax are CO2-based - the more your car pollutes, the more you pay. Motorists can save up to £110 in VED each year and thousands of pounds on their company car tax bills by choosing the cleanest, most fuel-efficient vehicles.
