speed bump

Whatcar.com readers have voted overwhelmingly that speed bumps are no use.

In an online poll, 68% of voters said speed bumps serve no purpose. The bumps attempt to reduce cars' speed or dissuade drivers from using the road in order to cut congestion.

However, just 30% of respondents said that speed bumps reduced speed, while a mere 2% thought they had any effect on reducing congestion.

Critics say that speed bumps are ineffective because drivers accelerate hard between them, causing increased noise and emissions, and are damaging to cars.

They can also slow emergency vehicles attending incidents.

Research also suggests that speed bumps can increase injuries to motorbike and bicycle riders who fall off and strike them.
