Your guide to... Motorway etiquette - Top tips to keep you safe

09 August 2006
1. Using the left lane is correct - it doesn't make you inferior. Middle-lane hoggers could free up 700 miles of motorway each year if they moved into the left lane.

2. Rubber-necking at an accident can cause unnecessary congestion on both sides of the motorway, and you could end up crashing yourself.

3. If you have a breakdown, move as far away from the stranded vehicle as possible, behind the crash barrier and up on to the bank if you can. Never attempt to change a wheel on a motorway - wait for your breakdown service to arrive. You're in danger of being struck by passing traffic if you do change a wheel.

4. Tailgating causes accidents, incites road rage, and won't get you there any faster. Leave a two-second gap, or you may run into the car in front if it has to stop suddenly.

5. Don't undertake - it's illegal and dangerous. The only time it's acceptable is if you're in a traffic jam and the inside lanes are moving faster than the outside lanes.

6. Take a break. Driver fatigue is most likely to occur during long journeys on motorways. You should take a 15-minute rest after every two hours of driving.

7. Roadworks frustrate everyone. Nevertheless, slow down in good time, keep in the same lane, and look out for broken down vehicles or queues ahead.
