For With the Alpina D3 you get most of the same attributes as you do with the BMW 3 Series, but with an Alpina twist. The engine gives punchy performance as well as good economy.

Against It isn’t quite as polished to drive as a 3 Series, and you only get a two-year warranty rather than the BMW’s three-year cover. There’s also the fact it’s based on the outgoing 3 Series model.

You can’t go wrong with a car that’s so similar to the BMW 3 Series, but as good as the Alpina D3 is, the standard Three is better.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

With the Alpina D3 you can order a car in any standard BMW colour. There are two basic trims, the standard one and the Lux pack, which includes sat-nav and costs more than £3000 extra. However, if you want to specify your car with a selection of personally chosen options, Alpina will charge you a Bespoke Order Charge of more than £1500. If you want a standard or Lux car with an auto gearbox, you will be charged only the cost of the auto, not the bespoke charge.

Alpina D3 Saloon 2.0D Biturbo 4dr

Wonderful performance from the 2 litre diesel biturbo. Power is instant and revs up to 5000rpm with no turbo lag or drop off; and it's returning…
