For The A3 Sportback comes with strong, efficient engines, and it strikes an excellent balance between comfort and control on SE suspension. The cabin is beautifully built, with plenty of space for four and a useful-sized boot.
Against It isn’t particularly cheap, the low-speed ride is a shade firm and rear visibility isn’t what it might be.

Target Price team says:
Petrol buyers can choose between 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0-litre turbo engines, but the 1.4 is our favourite. It's gutsy enough to let you enjoy the A3’s agile handling.
There is also an e-tron model, which offers a pure electric range of 30 miles before the 1.4 petrol engine kicks in. It makes sense only for company car users, though.
Diesel engines range from a 108bhp 1.6 to a 181bhp 2.0-litre. The 1.6 emits just 99g/km of CO2, so brings low company car tax bills. All the diesels are smooth and flexible, but our favourite is the 148bhp 2.0.
There are three trims, each with a different suspension setting: SE, lowered Sport and the lower-still S line. The SE’s suspension provides the best balance of comfort and control, and you can specify it at no extra cost with every trim level.
SE trim offers the best value for money too, but you might want to add one of two optional extras, such as automatic light and wipers and climate control.
