Test drove a 320i MSport before buying the Audi, and the Audi won hands down. Better engine and cabin. Have driven a 1.8 TFSI SE for 2 months now and enjoying it for my cross-country commute and a recent 1,500m tour of Scotland. Only gripes - it's a touch too long for parking in tight spaces and the silver plastic trim around the instruments is tacky and can squeak at high speed. Otherwise, the engine, handling, Hi-Fi (B&O) and interior in general is great, and economy better than my 2005 Volvo 1.8 S40 despite the extra performance.
I have just covered the first 1000 miles. I opted for an additional 15 extras. Ranging from: - a B&O stereo, interior light pack, sunroof, Xenon lights. The new A4 is a great upgrade to my old Passat and the old A4.
The new modular chassis is a big improvement, the ride is excellent, although a little bumpy on poor roads. I have found the gear box to be excellent, I did drive the 2.7 and found it grated a little on that.
The interior with the MMI is a real boost as it makes everything easy. Tee B&O stereo with 14 speakers is fantastic. The 3 zone air con wow! The hill hold is great, you just flick the switch and the handbrake is engaged every time you stop. The little features i.e. a speed warning you can set, all four door windows being one shot - you just don’t get in other cars Fords etc, shows you why you buy Audi.
We tested the BMW 320d and the Merc C class and the A4 is better. The BMW is looking old fashioned and there are just too many now on car sites. The Merc was a great drive but the footbrake with a handle that goes a very load clunk! Common Mercedes you can do better. AUDI residuals are the best the BMW in my view are on the slide, after all Germans buy Audi over BMW.
I love the design the LEDs give it a special look. We tow a caravan (don’t laugh they are 14K!) and this does it easy. 54 mpg on a run.
I just love driving it.
I have just covered th first 1200 miles in my new 1.8T S Line. I opted for the multitronic box as I had it in my previous A4 and once you go auto you can never go back. The new A4 is a revelation when compared to my last 04 model. The chassis is a major improvement and the ride is excellent even on the 18" rims. Turn in is much crisper and as a result cornering much more confidence inspiring.
The interior with its silver stitching and half leather looks great - a nice blend between sportiness and subtlety. Also the SD card stereo saves CD's rattling around the cubby holes. My girlfriend drives a 3 series and it doesn't even come close to matching the quality and design of the audi. Although she disgrees - but you're wrong Jinty!
Looks wise I must admit to enjoying the evolution not revolution approach. I parked up next to an old S Line and the difference is marked. Lets face it the LEDs are pretty cool too, anybody who says they aren't is just plain jealous.
I look forward to racking up the miles.
I own a 3 series 4door -18months old and have been disappointed in the vehicle and have looked at the Audi range and tested the A4 2.7 diesel multi. This can only be described as superb and clearly beats the BMW hands down. The ride is great the multi is so smooth and the overall finish and build quality is brilliant. It is also very apparent how the tyre performance on the Audi is what one expects from a car like this and lets hope they keep it as the run flats on the BMW are of no comparison and really do nothing to enhance ride or feel with the road. Although I would have preferred to have seen a new A4 rather than what one could percieve as face lifted I would buy this all day long.
