I divested myself of the BMW 1 series and collected the Audi last Monday. From first sitting in the car and driving the two hundred miles back home I was impressed with the total attention to detail. Audi have made driving a pleasure again for the company car driver. This afternoon I had notched up a total of 1100 miles and have enjoyed the car to the max. A trip to the DIY store this afternoon allowed me to fit a large flat pack wardrobe with the seats folded down. Still had a massive amount of room left. Economy is better than my last car, average at 75mph works out at 48.8mpg. Not bad for a fully loaded car! I think that Audi are on a winner with this car. Combining load capacity, economy and driving pleasure is guaranteed to attract the high milage company car driver. BIK is a reasonable 19%. Hat doffed to Audi!
As an Audi fan, I turned in my 1.9 TDI Avant for a 2.0 TDI S Line Saloon - I bought an ex-demo model with 4,000 on the clock. There are two features on this car that concern me:
1. When the car is on a hard left hand lock, there is a deep groaning noise and vibration on the steering - Audi tell me that this is a common fault, and the necessary part is on back-order.
2. The gearbox exhibits a rattle/vibration when descending the gears, particularly from 3rd to 2nd - this is now evident on 4th to 3rd as well. The local Audi dealer seems unconcerned, and their Service Manager told me that this is normal.
My attitude is "no, it isn't - not on a car that costs well in excess of £20,000". I have spent a working lifetime driving all the usual Vectras/Mondeos etc, and my reply is that this is why you pay the extra for an Audi. No modern car of this type should have these symptoms.
I would very much like to learn if I am in a minority of one, or are there other A4 S Line owners who feel that the build quality does not match up to previous Audis.
It's great to be driving a turbocharged petrol car again after five years of diesels.
You can barely hear the engine at tickover. Performance is very responsive and smooth in all situations and the car feels very taught and unruffled, regardless of the road conditions.
It has good sound insulation from wind and road noise. It's averaging 31mpg with 1500 miles under the wheels. My previous Mondeo TDCI with DPF averaged 38mpg, so what is the point driving diesel? It has already required 1/2 a litre of expensive FS oil right enough!
It's a delightful-looking machine externally, especially in silver with the uprated 18" alloys. I opted for the leather and B&O sound - amazing.
It's a definite improvement over previous model in terms of ride/handling compromise, although I do find the pedals to be offset too much to the right - but you get used to it.
Has received numerous comments in car parks about how good it looks although I suppose that will wear off once it is more common on the road.
So well done Audi for producing a quality all round package (initial immpressions) - hope it's reliable over the next few years.
I have had this car for two weeks now and after 12 years of Passats the additional extra refinement is very noticable. If you like electronics toys then this is the car for you. I am stiil discovering new dispalys and features. Probably the best electronic feature for me is the SD card slot. So instead of having a cabin full of CD's, (which I do not look after) I just have one card which was easliy loaded from an MP3 player. One 8 Gb card could hold 11 CD's. The only down side so far is the VERY notchy gear box. I can hear the synchro working hard and in the case of second gear - failing. When cold it often baulks and refuses to go into second. Handling is superb and wind noise is not as prevalent as other reviews suggest. My advice would be to test drive one for a whole day and see if you can live with a gear change, which unfortunately takes you back to the way gear changing was 30 years ago.

I took delivery of this car in April 2012, after negotiating a discount of roughly 18% plus options worth over £2500 all in the price was just over…
Although I yet to own this car, having had a test drive, I am having to wonder how tall the guys are that test these cars are? I am 6'1 and a half and…
