For A relatively affordable luxury car that's backed up by a strong and fuel-efficient diesel engine. This model also keeps company car- and road tax bills down to a sensible level, while the long-wheelbase version's extra rear legroom makes this a comfy four-seat limo.

Against It can't match the performance provided by the V8 engines.

The least pricey way into long-wheelbase A8 ownership is also one of the best. This engine has all the power you need and still offers the refinement and luxury that car buyers expect.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The Audi A8 is available with a wide range of powerful engines but, however you spec it, it will be expensive to buy or lease and suffer from heavy depreciation.

The pick of the range is the 3.0-litre V6 diesel with Audi's quattro four-wheel-drive system, but business users might be tempted to wait for the petrol-electric hybrid A8, which will go on sale in the UK in 2013. This will be able to run on electric power alone for a few miles, making short zero-emission journeys feasible, and helping to its low 147g/km CO2 emissions that bring low tax liabilities.

Every A8 comes with a long list of standard equipment, and Audi lets you personalise your car with a range of high-tech options, including night-vision assist, internet connectivity and all-LED headlights.

I have had my new A8 4.2TDi for about 2 months now, following a previous model A8 3.0TDi. In a number of respects the new A8 is not as good as the old…
