For The ultimate A8 for keen drivers, with colossal power and sports suspension. Four-wheel drive means you can make the most of the performance even in the wet.
Against The ride is stiffer than the standard car's. Fuel bills are high and resale values are poor. The V8 petrol and diesel are also quick but much cheaper to buy.
A fantastic way to travel quickly and comfortably, but the same can be said of other A8 models. The V8 diesel is only slightly slower but makes a more sensible buy.
You don’t need to buy one of the range-topping models to get a great A8. Our favourite is the entry-level 2.8 V6 FSI. It’s plenty quick enough for most buyers and surprisingly economical, too.
That’s not to say we’re not tempted by the diesels. The 3.0 TDI makes sense if you want to beat the taxman, but the 4.2-litre V8 is simply astonishing. Pulling power is colossal, with acceleration on a par with many performance cars. It’s quick enough to make you think twice before buying any of the larger-engined petrol models, especially the 6.0-litre W12.
The range-topper is almost double the price of the 2.8, but it’s not double the car. There’s a choice of short- and long-wheelbase versions. If you’ll be doing the driving, go for the SWB, which feels more agile. If you’ll be sat in the back reading the FT, the longer car has more room in the back.
