For Great to drive or be driven in, thanks to small-saloon dynamics and masses of space and refinement. Equipment includes full leather upholstery and four-zone climate control.

Against The Speed version will cost the same to run but has more performance and drama, making this one seem anodyne by comparison. Large pillars restrict visibility.

Bentley Continental Saloon

What Car? says

2 out of 5 stars

Flawed, but largely does all the things an expensive limo should. VW has done a good job of retaining the Bentley ‘feel’ while producing a very modern luxury car.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The Continental Flying Spur saloon is actually a shade cheaper than the Continental GT coupe on which it's based, but provides more space.

Two versions are available - a ‘standard’ edition and a range-topping Flying Spur Speed. Both are dual-natured beasts, with air suspension that can switch between four modes, ranging from limo-like comfort to sports saloon firmness.

VW’s 12-cylinder W12 engine powers both, though it’s tuned for more power in the speed. Whichever version you choose, the Flying Spur is classy, comfortable, spacious and oozes luxury. You can even specify twin armchairs to replace the rear bench.

There’s a hefty premium to pay for the Speed, though - nearly £16,000, although fuel economy and CO2 emissions remain the same for both. The Flying Spur isn’t perfect, but if money’s no issue there’s not a lot that will match its presence, prestige and performance.
