    Review-OnRoad The 4.0-litre V8 engine produces 414bhp and 295lb ft of pull. It responds almost instantly in any gear from almost any speed. It also produces a fantastic soundtrack, all the way to its 8400rpm redline. From a standstill, you'll hit 62mph in just 4.8 seconds, while the mid-range pull is so strong there's no need to thrash the engine to travel quickly.

    Review-OnRoad Nearly every suspension component is bespoke and made from lightweight aluminium, while the steering, race-specification rear differential and huge brakes are all engineered to optimise the car's performance. The steering is precise and well weighted, and the car is astonishingly grippy, beautifully balanced and responsive.

    Review-OnRoad Although the V8 engine produces a deep resonance, the M3's cabin remains pretty quiet because you're well shielded from other sources of noise. The manual gearshift requires precise timing and a deft touch; otherwise it can be clunky, especially at low speeds.

    Review-Ownership Every M3 comes with engine stop-start technology to cut fuel consumption in traffic, but you’ll struggle to get anywhere near the official 25.2mpg average if you work the engine hard. Company car users will pay tax at the maximum 35% rate, while insurance premiums will be stiff. Thanks to a loyal following for the car, resale values are good, albeit not quite as strong as on the coupe version.

    Review-OnRoad Like every 3 Series model, the M3 comes brimming with safety kit. Front, side and curtain airbags are standard, as is electronic stability control. The anti-lock brake system even incorporates a function that uses gentle pressure to keep the brake discs dry in the wet. Deadlocks are fitted as standard to make things difficult for thieves.

    Review-Cabin A huge range of adjustment makes it easy for all drivers to make themselves comfortable, while the sports seats provide just the right balance of comfort and support. The dashboard is similar to conventional 3 Series models', so it's simple and clearly laid out, but some people can find BMW's iDrive controller too complicated.

    Review-Cabin The M3 saloon's supercar performance is accompanied by family-car practicality. There's enough legroom for the longest limbs in both the front and rear seats, although those over six-feet tall might brush their heads on the roof in the back. The boot is the same size as any other 3 Series saloon's, which is one of the largest in its class.

    Review-Cabin The M3 is no stripped-out race replica. Features such as automatic headlights and wipers, xenon headlights, part-leather sports seats, electric driver's seat adjustment and reverse-parking sensors supplement the basics of 18-inch alloy wheels, climate control and a CD player. However, you do have to pay extra for full leather upholstery, larger alloy wheels and electronic suspension control.
