Against This version has just two-wheel drive, so lacks the ultimate versatility of the xDrive models.
We don't think you really need 4WD in an X1, so this - the cheapest model in the range - is our favourite.
Whether you consider the BMW X1 good value depends on how you look at it. Plenty of hatchbacks provide more space and similar performance for a lot less money, but if you judge it as an affordable pseudo-4x4, the X1 looks reasonably priced.

Of the four engines, the 20d EfficientDynamics is the most economical, while losing little in performance to the regular 20d SE. It looks to provide the best compromise between power and running costs. The 18d is maybe a touch meagre for this sort of car, while the 23d’s performance needs to be weighed against much higher emissions and fuel consumption.
