i had this car for about six months and i think there are a few good things about it but there all also bad things about it positive: well equipped ,spacious, comfortable, good looking negative: not very fuel efficient, high running cost, could be more reliable had gearbox problems. overall i think it is a good car but only good if you can keep up with the high running costs and the bad build quality.
I've had this car from new, broken down five/six times (lost count). Have had turbo fixed then replaced, engine replaced, raditor replaced. The most unrealible car I have ever owned. Will never buy again.
I disagree with virtually everything What Car/ says about the Caliber. I am now running my 2nd Caliber SXT CVT. Firstly I have owned 42 cars incl. BMW, SAAB VOLVO etc. THe CVT box on the Caliber is EXCELLENT . The car needs a little getting used to but then the Drive is very good with a tight turning circle. The instruments and standard equipment not found on most cars is excellent and so is the drivng position. The slight down side is the thick A pillars also on other cars, hard plastic & slight tyre roar from the otherwise excellent Continental tyres. I ran my first Caliber for 20 months with one slight fault immediately cured under warranty. It cost me £2K to px the first one Iyear ago. and depending on the px price I will change for another Caliber in September I rate the car 4 Star plus the best value on the road. I only use the car in Town and for a heavy two litre auto car the 24 mpg average is OK. A I.4 auto VW Polo I once owned only achieved 26 mpg in Town. BMW 318i auto 26 mpg in TownThe Honda Jazz CVT is much better at 34 mpg but the Jazz is far too flimsy and has dangerous sharp points on the front door edges which can damage your face in a confined space.
I was given this as a hire car in the States (SE trim, auto). Luckily, after a couple of days, I had a smash and it was towed away to be replaced by a Nissan hatch ...
I think the Whatcar review is spot on. The Caliber is cheap and doesn't it look and feel that way.
For American-style driving, it gets you from A to B in a leisurely ashion while the air con keeps you cool. But I wouldn't like to think what it's like on roundabouts, bends or from a set of lights. While there's quite a lot of luggage space in theory, it's quite a high but shallow space when the seats are up, and we had problems actually fittng luggage in.
VW or Ford are unlikely to lose much sleep over the Caliber.
