The Fiat Sedici - so named because the word is Italian for '16', or 4x4 - is the first product of a joint venture between the Italian firm and Suzuki.
As such, it shares its architecture with the impressive Suzuki Swift, and the 1.6 petrol engine, four-wheel drive layout and five-speed manual gearbox come from the Japanese maker. Fiat donates its Multijet diesel and a six-speed gearbox, and the styling is Italian, too, by Giugiaro. Of the two engines, the Fiat diesel shines, with plenty of punch from low revs, whereas the petrol unit feels more peaky.
The build quality is impressive, and 4WD versions of the Sedici even shine off-road thanks to a simple yet cleverly executed four-wheel drive system that provides good traction. All models are well equipped and reasonably priced, but rear space is tight, as is the boot.
