For Titanium X-spec cars come with loads of kit, including a glass roof, part-leather upholstery, xenon headlights and heated front seats. This engine is gutsy enough to keep most people happy.

Against If you don't do many miles a year, you may be better off with the equivalent petrol-engined model, rather than this expensive diesel-engined car.

This is our favourite engine in the Ford C-Max range, but we think this version is far too expensive. Go for the cheaper Zetec-trimmed model.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The first thing buyers have to decide is whether they want the regular five-seat Ford C-Max or the more expensive, but more family-friendly, seven-seat Grand C-Max.

Our favourite engine in the C-Max is the 114bhp 1.6-litre diesel. It has all the strength you need, even when you're loaded up with passengers and luggage. It's so good, it renders the stronger 2.0-litre diesels a little redundant.

In most cases, the choice of engine dictates the trim you get. The 103bhp 1.6-litre petrol is available only in entry-level Zetec trim, while the 99 and 123bhp 1.0 petrol turbos are also available in more luxurious Titanium trim. The strongest engines come only in range-topping Titanium X trim, but they're too expensive to recommend. Zetec offers the best blend of price and equipment, so that's what we'd go for.
