This car is a work of genius... The ride is incredibly compliant, comparable with what I remember of driving a Mondeo Mk3 and being a passenger in a current 5 Series. No cornering body roll or understeer to speak of. Cornering grip is surprisingly high - comparable to my last 3 Series (2009 reg). Dash is very nice in Titanium trim, with no annoying squeaks or rattle either - not a single one. Engine is nippy and very economical - I get 53mpg on my daily 20 mile round trip extra-urban commute (cold start each way) - and that's with only 200 miles on the clock, so I expect to more mpg as the car runs in over the next 3000 miles. PowerShift auto gearbox is very smooth and responsive. Seats offer superb lateral support but the driver's adjustable lumbar support is a bit too low down for me (minor niggle). Steering is very accurate and nicely weighted, with none of the usual slack around the dead ahead position. Styling is always a subjective topic but, to my eye anyway, I think Ford have got it spot on with the 2013 Fiesta, to the point where it makes my neighbour's Mk7 Golf and new Polo look incredibly boring and dull.
But it can't be all good news. Two improvements are needed, which would take this car to another level again: 1) Additional (seventh) gear ratio on the PowerShift gearbox, to improve refinement and fuel economy circa 70mph. 2) Additional sound proofing, to reduce tyre roar circa 60mph and above.
Summary: Very highly recommended, without any reservation.
I opted for the Zetec-S which has all the gizmos I really need as opposed to gizmos which are more of a gimmick. Diesel has superior economy but you would have to do lots of miles a year to justify the diesel. I recorded 48mpg and the car is new so in time it will be into the 50's and maybe 60mpg. The other bonus is free road tax and cheaper to buy and fuel. The petrol engine is smoother and quieter too. But enough of the fuel debate, whats it like to drive? Superb handling car and despite sports suspension, very comfortable. Anyone who laughs at a 1.0 engine will eat humble pie because this 125ps version with the turbo is very nippy indeed. My only criticism is the need for a 6th gear at 70mph as it revs a little too high in 5th and also the gear change is too long a throw (albeit nice and smooth). The sports seats are far better than the standard seats and the SYNC system is fantastic. I can play music on my iPhone 5 via bluetooth or if I use it via USB, I can even ask for a particular track! SYNC can dial 999 for you if you have a crash & uses GPS to give your location. The cabin materials feel mostly excellent and the instrument panel is clear and bright (brightness adjustable). Looks wise it is a big improvement with the Aston style grille. Plenty of space and overall an excellent car that beats the rivals on all fronts (bar VW cabin quality) and all but eliminates the need for rattly diesels. Smooth, nippy, economical, good value, well equipped and fun. Job done!
The car that we own is the 3dr titanium automatic <3000miles. I will say that from the outset WHAT A GUTLESS PIECE OF S*** this car is. When on a motorway in the wet you are taking your life in your hands if you try to overtake a lorry (they are limited to 56mph)The engine just doesn't have any poke and the gearbox does what it wants to when it wants to. The windscreen wipers play with them selves and the fuel economy just doesn't exist. We are averaging 38mpg on a motorway run at 60mph. Yes, it does have all the flutes, whistles and bells that go with a modern car;but I would prefer a car with a little more get up and go. I pity the next owner of this car because I am going to offload it as soon as possible
Super little car for the money - much better than my 2004 model it replaced. Superb drive and handling but as with other reviews, short trip driving keeps consumption below 40mpg Major gripe is the lack of a spare wheel. Others should be aware that unless your car is ordered from the factory you have to pay £280 for the spare wheel kit. I ordered a brand new unregistered car sourced from a dealers stock and was refused the £98 spare wheel option because the vehicle had left the factory. Ford customer service very unhelpful and condescending claiming the extra cost was the labour for a retro fit !
