For A good spread of mid-range power means the Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi 115 Edge is a flexible performer, and with great official economy, you'll travel a massive distance between fill ups. There’s plenty of substance in the basic Edge trim including electric front windows, air-conditioning, remote central locking, DAB radio and Bluetooth connectivity.
Against This engine is a bit flat and a bit jerky at very low revs, and not that quiet when extended, either. You get some rather cheap-looking cabin trim, including plastic door pulls, and you’ll need to trade up to Zetec to get alloy wheels.

There isn't a bad engine among the ones in the Ford Focus range that we've tried, but we reckon the best is the 113bhp 1.6 diesel. It’s strong enough and impressively smooth, although it’s not as efficient as some rivals in real-world driving.

However you specify your Focus, make sure you get a big discount. Dealers should be prepared to knock off thousands of pounds, especially on more expensive versions. The Focus doesn’t have particularly strong resale values, so a discount will help partially offset the steep depreciation.
