For The diesel engine is smooth and flexible, and this 2WD version is cheaper to buy and run than the 4WD models. It also feels lighter, more agile and more comfortable to drive.

Against This version may be cheaper than the 4WD models, but it's still hardly cheap. And, of course, it lacks the ultimate versatility of the 4WD car.

In almost every way, the 2WD Kuga is a better car than the 4WD version. However, even this version is rather dear, so we'd stick with the Zetec-trimmed car.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The Ford Kuga model range is a simple one. There are two diesels and one petrol engine, three trim levels and, on some versions, the choice of two- or four-wheel drive.

We favour the cheaper Zetec models, which are still well specified, and with two-wheel drive. They’re cheaper to buy and run, and better to drive, than the four-wheel-drive models, although naturally they don’t have the same overall versatility.

The range-topping high-performance petrol version is quick enough to shock some hot hatches away from the lights, but the diesel models are far more sensible buys.

Whichever Kuga you go for, remember to check Ford's website before you buy – there are almost always special offers to be had.

Definitely the one to go for. Comfortable, easy to drive, good quality apart from centre panel on dash which looks tacky.
