For This diesel engine gives the best economy of any i20, and it sits in a lower tax band than the petrol cars. Comfort is the best trim, with alloy wheels, four electric windows and air-con.

Against What the three-door gains over the five-door through a lower price, it loses with less practicality. The engine isn't that much more economical than the petrol engines, and it's painfully slow.

Target Price team says:

Of the various engines available in the i20, you're best off with the entry-level 77bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine. It feels very peppy for a small engine, and there's good flexibility, too. If you're after a gutsier petrol engine, you can also choose a 98bhp 1.4.

Entry-level Classic cars come with air-conditioning, remote central locking and electric front windows, but we'd recommend stepping up to Comfort spec – you'll get masses of kit, including alloys, electric rear windows, steering wheel-mounted controls and a cable to hook up your MP3 player.

Style models get luxuries such as half-leather seats, a leather steering wheel, front foglights and climate control. For all that, though, one of the biggest attractions must be that the i20, like all Hyundais, comes with a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.
