For The V6 petrol engine is smooth and sounds stunning. And, while Luxury is the most basic trim, it still has sat-nav, a CD changer, leather trim and rear parking sensors.

Against You have to work the engine hard to make decent progress, and the weight of the car dents performance. Together, these make the gearbox change up and down more often than is ideal.

It's not a bad car, but when the diesel version costs no more, yet returns much better fuel economy, we can't completely recommend this model.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

As you might expect of a former What Car? Car of the Year, there's not much to criticise about the XF. However, some may find the lack of smaller - and therefore cheaper to run - engines rather a disappointment. Of the engine range, the V6 and V8 petrol units are certainly impressive, but it's the punchy and refined diesels that are our favourites.

Prices for the range may look a little on the high side, but they're partly explained by the generous equipment list that means there's no need to buy anything dearer than the cheapest Luxury version.

There are a huge range of options available, including a rear-view camera and adaptive cruise control. You can also choose from a particularly wide selection of exterior colours and interior trim.
