For This XF is almost a second quicker to 60mph than the regular unit, yet matches its fuel economy. Premium Luxury adds softgrain leather and wood veneers to the basic trim.
Against The stronger diesel engine costs £3000 more than the standard unit - which is a lot to shave a few tenths off the 0-60mph time.
This is a fine package of performance and economy, but we don't think it's worth the £3000 it costs over the same model with the regular diesel engine.
As you might expect of a former What Car? Car of the Year, there's not much to criticise about the XF. However, some may find the lack of smaller - and therefore cheaper to run - engines rather a disappointment. Of the engine range, the V6 and V8 petrol units are certainly impressive, but it's the punchy and refined diesels that are our favourites.
Prices for the range may look a little on the high side, but they're partly explained by the generous equipment list that means there's no need to buy anything dearer than the cheapest Luxury version.
There are a huge range of options available, including a rear-view camera and adaptive cruise control. You can also choose from a particularly wide selection of exterior colours and interior trim.
