For This is an effortless performer, providing strong overtaking potential and excellent refinement. Luxury trim includes dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, and a full colour touchscreen with navigation and voice control.

Against As you'd expect, this engine is not quite as quiet or as rapid as the petrol engines in the range.

The V6 diesel is the engine of choice if you’re in the market for an XJ. It’s powerful and refined, and its relatively light thirst gives the XJ an impressive cruising range.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

If you spend most of your life being chauffeured, you’ll prefer a Mercedes S-Class. But, if you enjoy driving, no other rival will reward you like an XJ.

Money no object? Try a 5.0-litre petrol car, with performance and handling to rival the quickest supercars. Yet, back off the gas, and it's as whisper-quiet as a toddler’s bedtime story.

Mind you, its thirst is as savage as its performance, so the diesel is the XJ of choice. It’s an effortless performer, with 40mpg economy and refinement to rival the petrol models.

The car comes in long- and short wheelbase forms, but neither is cramped.

If you’re feeling flush, Portfolio trim gives you a superb Bowers and Wilkins stereo, a rear parking camera, headlights that respond to your steering inputs and a suede headlining.

A Sport Pack brings aero tweaks and sporty design touches to the XJ, while a Speed Pack increases the top speed of the supercharged V8 model but aren't worth the extra.
