For The Land Rover Freelander 2.2 eD4 150 GS provides muscular performance from low down in the rev range but it quickly runs out of power as the revs rise. GS trim gets the balance between price and equipment just about right.
Against The 2WD cars are reasonably economical and make more sense for business users. However, they feel underpowered and less composed on- and off-road than the 4WD models.
The Land Rover Freelander 2.2 eD4 150 GS is an extremely civilised car, with a luxury saloon-like ride, a commanding driving position and a comprehensive equipment roster. If you’re looking to balance a decent level of equipment with reasonable running costs, then the 2WD GS should be just the ticket.
The first choice is which of the two turbodiesel engines to go for. The 148bhp unit comes with a manual gearbox (an auto ’box is a cost option) and the option of two- or four-wheel drive, while the 188bhp model has an automatic as standard. The front-wheel drive 148bhp version is the most economical model in the range, although still not as clean as a BMW X3.
Even the entry-level S version is reasonably equipped, although the GS is the model we’d go for. It comes with climate control and Land Rover’s Terrain Response System to make the most of the Freelander’s off-road abilities. Top-spec HSE versions come with luxury-car levels of kit, but have price tags to match.
Land Rover's reliability record isn’t the best, but it is improving. As a brand, it finished 14th out of 27 in the 2010 JD Power customer satisfaction survey, and although the Freelander was seventh out of eight in the SUV class, owners were still pretty complimentary about its mechanical reliability.
