For The LS is supremely quiet, with a cosseting ride, especially when cruising at speed. It's comfortable, too, and packed with comfort and safety kit.

Against The gearbox can be hesitant and the cabin doesn't feel special enough for a car of this price.

Supremely refined and comfortable, but a bit bland to sit in and the gearbox rather lets the side down

Lexus LS Saloon 600h 4dr

This - the cheapest LS - is the one to have. However, before you commit, make sure the sums add up. A rival car could make more sense in the long term

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

If you're looking for the most environmentally friendly luxury car and have come here because of the hybrid model, there's bad news. Not only is the LS600h extremely expensive to buy, a diesel Mercedes S-class is more economical.

The LS does incur lower company car tax liability, but that is offset by its considerably higher list price. Where the LS most impresses is in its comfort and, in particular, its refinement.

Some of the LS's rivals are sharper to drive, but it's far from disgraced, and we'd recommend taking Lexus up on the 48-hour test drives it is offering to allow its potential buyers to more fully appreciate its cars. All you have to do is to register on the company's website.

The most comfortable car I have ridden in, though…
