For The Maserati Quattroporte has the engine, the handling and the pace to make a convincing sporting saloon. It looks like nothing else and has a plush cabin
Against It's not as comfy, spacious or classy as its luxury car rivals. The ride is overly firm and the semi-automatic gearbox is jerky
The Maserati Quattroporte may be highly desirable, but it's also seriously flawed and not up to the standard set by rivals from Audi BMW, Mercedes and Jaguar.
If there's a more stunning-looking saloon than the Maserati Quattroporte, we can't think of one. Best of all, both 4.2- and 4.7-litre models have the performance to go with it - provided you keep the engine spinning at more than 3000rpm.
The 4.7 is available in two guises, and though the Sport GT S has only a smidgin more power than the S, it is so different in gearbox and chassis tuning that it really is worth the extra £6000.
Which to buy overall? It depends whether you want the GT comforts of the standard 4.2 model or a true sporty saloon, in which case get the Sport GT S, which is arguably the car the Quattroporte always should have been. You can also be assured of real exclusivity, as Maserati sells cars in limited numbers compared with its German competitors.
