For Like every diesel 6, this model has better residuals than the petrol equivalent, plus stronger low-down pull and better economy. We prefer this engine to the less powerful diesel, as it has more overtaking punch. TS models are well equipped, including cruise and climate controls.

Against Price is the biggest problem: this engine costs much more than the same trim in a petrol-engined car, while it's also more than the 123bhp engine.

This is our favourite diesel engine in the range, and company users will love this model. Overall, it's our 2010 Family Car of the Year.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The Mazda 6 is a very appealing family car choice. Although it's not quite as refined or classy as the class leaders, most versions are significantly cheaper, and few rivals can match it for style or long-term reliability.

We reckon the cheaper models are the pick of the range - they supply plenty of kit and power, but keep ownership costs incredibly low.

Venture higher up the range and you get plenty of kit, but you lose out on the 6's value-for-money appeal, and the 2.5-litre petrol engine has a bit of a thirst.

Some of the interior trim is rather hard and plasticky, but this is a well-built car and our reliability and customer satisfaction surveys suggest that owners are a happy bunch and unlikely to be troubled by many reliability worries.
