For This most powerful version of the 2.2 engine has a great blend of pace and economy: it's seriously quick, yet averages about 50mpg. To go with the Sport name come larger alloys, a sporty bodykit and half-leather upholstery.

Against Price is the stumbling block here: this is the dearest engine in the 6 matched to the dearest trim. Plus, this engine isn't as refined as the less powerful diesels.

We can't fault the combination of performance and 50mpg economy, but the high price puts us off. A cheaper model makes a more sensible buy.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The Mazda 6 is a very appealing family car choice. Although it's not quite as refined or classy as the class leaders, most versions are significantly cheaper, and few rivals can match it for style or long-term reliability.

We reckon the cheaper models are the pick of the range - they supply plenty of kit and power, but keep ownership costs incredibly low.

Venture higher up the range and you get plenty of kit, but you lose out on the 6's value-for-money appeal, and the 2.5-litre petrol engine has a bit of a thirst.

Some of the interior trim is rather hard and plasticky, but this is a well-built car and our reliability and customer satisfaction surveys suggest that owners are a happy bunch and unlikely to be troubled by many reliability worries.
