For The 6 is great to drive, and low CO2 emissions make it a sound company car choice. The cabin is spacious, it's well equipped and reliability is excellent.

Against There are quieter family cars available, and the ride is slightly on the firm side. Interior trim looks good, but some of the materials feel cheap to touch.

A well-rounded and hugely appealing family car that's practical, easy on the pocket and great to drive. Little wonder it's our 2010 Family Car of the Year.

6 Our pick

Mazda 6 Hatchback 2.2D 163 TS 5dr

This is our favourite diesel engine in the range, and company users will love this model. Overall, it's our 2010 Family Car of the Year.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The Mazda 6 is a very appealing family car choice. Although it's not quite as refined or classy as the class leaders, most versions are significantly cheaper, and few rivals can match it for style or long-term reliability.

We reckon the cheaper models are the pick of the range - they supply plenty of kit and power, but keep ownership costs incredibly low.

Venture higher up the range and you get plenty of kit, but you lose out on the 6's value-for-money appeal, and the 2.5-litre petrol engine has a bit of a thirst.

Some of the interior trim is rather hard and plasticky, but this is a well-built car and our reliability and customer satisfaction surveys suggest that owners are a happy bunch and unlikely to be troubled by many reliability worries.
