For The CLS is a stylish, refined, quick and comfortable car. It has the head-turning looks of a coupé, but with some practicality, too
Against It is more of a dramatic, less practical saloon than a genuine coupé. Rear access is not great
Wonderfully smooth, refined and relaxed tourer that will turn heads like little else. But it's best to view it as a more exclusive, more imposing and sportier E-Class
Mercedes calls its CLS a 'four-door coupe' but we beg to differ – it's a sleek-looking saloon. It's been around a while now, long enough for the CLS to have had a mild refresh. However, Mercedes got the styling so right from the offing that its mid-life changes were minimal. Still a serious head-turner, it's based on the underpinnings of the E-Class saloon.
The sporty looks and low-slung driving position the CLS are for show, the CLS is more about comfortable cruising than out and out driver involvement – even with the more hardcore AMG 63 model.
Its 'bitsa' status didn't stop Mercedes taking the time to give it a bespoke dashboard, the interior feeling cosy thanks to that rakish roofline.
Four engines, three petrols and one diesel make up the well-specified range, the turbodiesel being our pick of the bunch for its all-round performance and decent economy.
