What does it cost?
For A 2.2-litre diesel engine that puts out 204bhp and can do 53mpg in such a big, comfortable car would have been unthinkable a few years ago. Here, it's reality.
Against There's some gruffness from the engine when accelerating hard, although it's refined enough the rest of the time. Sport models have larger wheels and their ride is more jittery as a result.
What Car? says
If it wasn't for the E220 CDI, this could well be our favourite E-Class. However, given that the E220 CDI feels no slower in the real world and is cheaper to buy, we'd prefer that model.
