Once upon a time, there was a wide range of engines in the M-Class, but no longer. Now, there are just two diesel and one (high-performance) petrol units to choose from. Even the lowest-powered engine is adequate, and only the power-crazed will stray beyond the 228bhp 3.0-litre diesel, which is our favourite engine.

Also don't forget that, if you're looking for an 4x4 that can do a few MPV tricks, you won't find it here – unlike some of its rivals, the M Class doesn't offer a seven-seat option. It's a strict five-seater. Likewise, don't come to the M-Class expecting a full-on mud-plugger: its off-road capabilities are extremely limited.
