For Superb drive; refinement; strong performance and image; bags of space for five and their luggage.
Against There's no seven-seater option and it's not as sharp to drive as a BMW X5. Plus, the interior plastics are not up to par and there are concerns over residual values.
The M-Class has a lot more going for it than just the badge.
Once upon a time, there was a wide range of engines in the M-Class, but no longer. Now, there are just two diesel and one (high-performance) petrol units to choose from. Even the lowest-powered engine is adequate, and only the power-crazed will stray beyond the 228bhp 3.0-litre diesel, which is our favourite engine.
Also don't forget that, if you're looking for an 4x4 that can do a few MPV tricks, you won't find it here – unlike some of its rivals, the M Class doesn't offer a seven-seat option. It's a strict five-seater. Likewise, don't come to the M-Class expecting a full-on mud-plugger: its off-road capabilities are extremely limited.
What's perhaps more of a surprise is that you can get pretty major discounts on this Mercedes, and you can start your shopping by checking out our offers section.
