For The 350 CDI diesel provides strong performance yet is refined and reasonably frugal. It's our favourite engine in the range. Long-wheelbase models have palatial space for rear-seat passengers.
Against This long-wheelbase version won't appeal to keen drivers as much as the short-wheelbase one. Even with the diesel engine, the S-Class isn’t exactly cheap to run.
You pay a lot for a few more inches of rear legroom. It might be worth it if you're a chauffeur, but if you'll be driving, stick to the short-wheelbase model.
You could certainly argue that, pound for pound, the S-Class is the best car in the world. Whatever you want from a luxury car, the big Merc does it - and does it very well.
