For A sweet-driving car, thanks to its supple chassis and its 95bhp 1.4 petrol engine, which gets it to 60mph in 12.8 seconds yet still returns an average 46.3mpg. Active trim comes with air-con, Bluetooth and a smarter look than Access.

Against As with the rest of the range, tall drivers will struggle for legroom in the back of the car. The 207 hasn’t performed well in our JD Power customer satisfaction survey.

With its five-door practicality and lively yet economical petrol engine, the 1.4 VTi 95 five-door is our pick of the 207 range. Don’t pay full price though.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

While the Peugeot 207 range as a whole is far from cheaply priced, the good news is that it is not hard to find big discounts on the list price. For example, our best buy is the 1.4 VTi 95 Active five-door, but our Target Price shows that you should be aiming for a discount of more than £1000.

So whichever model you settle on, don't hand the dealer a cheque for anywhere near the full amount. While the 207's sharp styling makes it desirable as a new car, the same isn’t true of second-hand models.

The 207's resale values are around 10% lower than those of a Volkswagen Polo for example. The knowledge that you are going to have to take a bit of a financial hit come trade-in time, gives even more incentive to haggle hard when buying new. At least running costs are reasonable for most models.
