The Porsche 911-997 was the logical progession from a BMW M3 - almost as a rite of passage, before having a family! I shortlisted the 911 along with an Aston Martin V8 Vantage Roadster - and Lambo Gallardo (used). The Porsche won on 5 counts: 1) Precision and quality of drive; 2) All-wheel traction, meaning that the power can be slammed onto the tarmac regardless of prevailing weather conditions; 3) Daily usability - no other supercar (aside of the 911 Turbo or Turbo S) comes close; 4) Relative frugality compared with other equivalent vehicles; 5) Quality of construction. My car has £20,000 of optional extras, but the one I'd definitely recommend is the PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust). I am very pleased with this car, and am unlikely to ever sell it. I am probably going to buy a luxury saloon (e.g. Audi S5) or fully-loaded S.U.V. (e.g. forthcoming Porsche Cajun) to complement my 911.
Have had this car now for a year and 7000 miles. It does bring a big grin each time the roof is down. Build/usage is as I'd expect of a daily car, having had BMW's for years. Best car I've bought!
This car belongs to a friend of mine, he bought it brand-new in November 2008. I has the new PDK gearbox, this makes it quicker and more economical than the manual version too. If you buy one, turn off the stereo as the sound of the engine is all you need. You can drive it almost anywhere with ease, however put your foot down and it is truely awesome!!!!!

I had a Mk1 MX-5 for seven years until I wrote it off in a minor shunt (one bashed panel is enough when a car is 15 years old, sadly). Now I have a…
