Renault Clio Hatchback 1.2 TCe 100 Dynamique TomTom 5dr
The best all-round Clio, with a responsive yet economical engine and quality feel. As one of the best superminis on the market it's only bettered by newer models, like the latest Ford Fiesta and VW Polo.
The smart money goes on the 1.2 Turbo because it's strong, smooth, responsive and affordable to buy and run. The entry-level 1.2 is weedy, and the 1.6s are not flexible enough at low revs. The strong, smooth 1.5 diesels (84bhp and 105bhp) are good, but they cost more to buy.
Don't bother with entry-level Extreme models - they have a CD player and electric front windows, but not much else. S trim is unique to three-door models, but we prefer Dynamique, with the soft-touch dash that transforms the Clio, plus sat-nav, alloy wheels, automatic headlights and wipers and optional air-con.
Privilege cars (five-door versions only) have climate control, powered windows and part-leather seats, while Initiale cars get full leather, sat-nav and parking sensors. Nice, but they cost too much.
GT models (three-door only) have stiffer suspension, which makes them sharper to drive at the expense of comfort. The petrol is gutless, and the diesel pricey.
