I rented this car on holiday. It was stylish and seemed well made and plush inside, and the dashboard screen looked cool. It combined a smooth ride with decent handling and was impressively quiet and smooth. Performance from the small engine was OK once you got the turbo spinning but slower than a milkfloat at low revs, and it didn't use much fuel. On the downside the electronic parking brake was operated with a flimsy plastic switch that didn't inspire much confidence, but the worst thing was the lack of rear space. The rear seats were all rather cramped, the worst being the narrow middle one which was compromised further because this car had a big storage box between the front seats that extended back to nearly touch the middle rear seat, taking up all of its legroom. That's a bit of a fiasco in a car that's supposed to be aimed at families and I am suprised that Renault could get the Scenic so wrong in its third generation. My own Citroen Xsara Picasso is an older model that feels less plush and doesn't like corners, but its engine is more flexible and it seats five in comfort, making the Scenic look rather silly as a family car.
hace just testdriven the edc version of this car for a few days, so cannot really comment on ownership costs. however it proved to be an impressive car, which drove and handled very well on indifferent suffolk roads. in spite of a modest engine, the smoothness coupled to an excellent auto gearbox made it a relaxing and easy car to travel in. i have reservations about the cumbersome folding arrangements for the rear seats. . the car was very sensitive to fierce crosswinds, but not enough to be a concern.
in conclusiion i will seriously conder this as a down sized replacement for my laguna sport tourer next year. it made sense, with impressive fuel consumption-- 50 mpg plus is easily obtainable
I purchased this scenic from a local Car hire company with 18000 miles on the clock and 10 months old It is in mint condition and was 7k less than new price so took a slight gamble. No need to worry ive driven it for 3 months and am delighted with the looks, performance, equipment and economy.Has attracted many admiring comments so far.Performance is great once you are over 2000rpm, slightly sluggish at low revs.I average 40mpg around town and 55mpg cruisin on the motorway at 70mph. The equipment on the dynamique version is all that you can ask for with an added bonus of a USB port for memory sticks to play huge music collections via the CD player. The cabin/load space is excellent. The rear seats slide and/or fold upwards to create a small van load capacity. Its a stylish, practical family car and intend to keep it for many years.
