For The 9-3 saloon has a distinctive look and is well-priced considering how much kit you get. The boot is spacious, the cabin roomy and comfortable

Against Some of the engines emit more carbon dioxide than their rivals. The 9-3 isn't as classy or good to drive as its German rivals

A distinctive and cheaper alternative to its German rivals, but not up to their high overall standards

9-3 Our pick

Saab 9-3 Saloon 1.9TiD 120 Turbo Edition 4dr

With our favourite engine in the range and a decent amount of equipment for the money, this is the version of the 9-3 to go for

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The 9-3 may look dated next to some of its rivals, but it's still a distinctive model and worth considering. The best models are those with the least powerful of the diesel engines and in the entry-level trims, which come with plenty of kit.

If you do buy one, consider Saab's Service and Maintenance Plan, which covers not only servicing, but also wear and tear items for the first three years after a new car is registered.

That means not being billed for tyres, brakes, exhaust or routine servicing, as well as being covered for essential repair work to wear-and-tear items that may be identified between services - and any work subsequent to your Saab failing its first MoT test.

You can also start a plan if you have already purchased a new Saab, and it is within 6 months of registration and has less than 1000 miles on the clock.
